Hojicha was born in Kyoto in the 1920s when a tea merchant began roasting leftover tea stems and leaves over charcoal — transforming what might have been discarded into something extraordinary. In Zen Buddhist philosophy, this is the essence of wabi-sabi: the beauty of imperfection, the wisdom of what is overlooked, the warmth of the humble and the simple. Hojicha teaches us that transformation is always possible, and that what appears ordinary often contains the deepest nourishment.
Our Hojicha is a roasted green tea powder crafted from carefully selected tea leaves and stems, stone-milled into a fine powder. It brews into a smooth, comforting cup with notes of toasted cereal and balanced umami — warm, grounding, and deeply satisfying. Low in caffeine, high in comfort.
Preparation: Whisk 1 tsp into 6–8 oz of hot water (185°F), or use as a latte base with steamed milk
Ritual Suggestions
Evening Wind-Down: Low caffeine and deeply warming — hojicha is the perfect closing ritual for the day. Brew as the light fades and let the toasted warmth ease you toward rest.
Wabi-Sabi Practice: As you prepare your hojicha, reflect on something in your life that appears imperfect but contains hidden beauty. This is the teaching of the roasted leaf.
Grounding After Meditation: The earthy, toasted quality of hojicha is deeply anchoring. Use it to return to the body after any practice that takes you inward.
